I hate to have to say it, but my freelance work is really kicking my butt! My next update will be later than I want it to be.
Tusk now has an official Patreon page! I will always upload the comic here for everyone to read for free, but if anyone were interested in giving a little bit of additional support to my work, it sure would give me the resources to produce more pages more quickly!

If you like the comic, consider voting for Tusk on topwebcomicsimage

In case you haven't seen it, check out "Mindfold" my other comic on Comicfury

Setting aside the medusa effect, I'd hate to have to grapple with someone who had snakes for hair. With fangs like those I'm betting that they are venomous.

I just noticed that the redhead on the far left seems to have some sort of pistol. I'm pretty sure that's the first one I've seen in this comic!

I get the impression that personal firearms are exceedingly rare in this world. Is that due to scarcity of resources (lack of sulphur or saltpeter, for instance), a general preference to use magic in a fight, or is there some other reason?

More than likely, the technology just hasn't advanced enough, especially with the other work-arounds you listed being viable alternatives. That cannon on the seahorse sub seems to indicate that black powder is not in short supply.

Yes it is, indeed a pistol. Firearms are rare in this world, though one did appear on this page. A constant theme in this comic is me trying to imagine how a hypothetical society and civilization would develop in a universe where magic is real. So, I conjecture that some people would prefer to rely on magical technology to get things done, while others would rely more on mechanical technology. Most tools in such a world would probably incorporate a combination of both. Which choices a person would make in any given case would depend on all sorts of factors, such as culture, wealth, laws, aptitude, religion, etc.

Given the pre-existance of gunpowder, the basics of designing an actual firearm are simple. It's the design of a reliable ignition system that's complicated & where magic may be brought into play,

@Fallopiancrusader:
I imagine that one of the considerations is the existence of technology that enables any old yahoo/thug to suppress magic. This would encourage a balanced mixture of technologies that were magical, non-magical, & mixed. The alternative is to risk being rendered defenseless. We've seen this already, when our Lady-Orc first met the Ambassador-in-a-fishbowl

@dmc_run There are definitely many varieties of magical and non-magical technologies available. There are also social and political covenants that regulate some aspects of those technologies. For example, it seems that anti magic grenades and firebombs come with some sorts of prohibitions attached to them.

So Tusk is Rainy Day Woman #12, and this lady is #35?

They'll stone you when you're raiding a ship of pride.
They'll stone you when you have lost your ride.
They'll stone you when you're tryin' to make a buck.
Then they'll stone you and then you'll say "Oh, F*ck!"
Tell ya what, I would not feel so all alone,
Everybody must get stoned.

Technical Questions

Can the Medusa control her power, or must she keep her eyes shut/covered when she wants to avoid harming her crewmates?

While her eyes are shut, can she through her snakes well-enough to navigate, & target her victim?

I am figuring that gorgons in this world have to take the time to consciously focus their power in order for it to have effect. Otherwise, if everyone who makes eye contact with them automatically turns to stone, they would be complete outcasts. So I interpret gorgons here to be slightly less powerful than they are in Greek mythology. Still, gorgons traditionally were a decorative eyeless mask when in general society, as a formal courtesy. Yes, she can see through the eyes of her snakes when she is wearing a mask.

Nice work on varying the weapons a little instead of having them all look the same, especially the swords.
I'm seeing stylized three-bar hilts along with schiavona, mortuary and half-basket styles and variations on those, along with different blade styles, which wasn't at all uncommon in the age of swords...break a blade ? no problem you can use the same hilt and guard with a new one. The famous Highland basket hilted broadsword (sometimes called a claymore the same as the two-handed one) used a lot of different blades with a sort of standard hilt and guard, no two were exactly the same, even in 'official' regiments.
British troops were issued swords which could vary somewhat depending on what was in stores, but officers bought theirs with their own money and had them custom built by the swordmakers the way they wanted them with pretty much every one being at least slightly different.

tl/dr: nice attention to detail :)

Is that a 'Jambiya' on the belt of the girl with the pistol ?

Thanks for noticing! I wanted to show that there is a lot of cultural mixing on this world. Everyone's being jammed together from different parts of the world. So everyone's weapons, costumes, armor, personal decoration, etc. all follow different traditions of decorative and industrial design styles. Since this is a fantasy world, there isn't any literal correlation with traditional Earth weapons, but I definitely rip off Earth designs, just out of laziness. So, yes, that knife is based on a Jambiya. On this page, I stole the designs of a rapier and a shamshir

(Edit) (Delete) (Reply)

Oldarmourer
6th Oct 2022, 8:02 AM

I see that one as more of a mameluke style sabre like the USMC dress sword than a shamshir which generally has a much more sharply curved blade, but variations are wide and many so it still fits :)

(Edit) (Delete) (Reply)

Oldarmourer
6th Oct 2022, 8:08 AM

and really, there are only so many ways to make a sharpened bar of steel so of course there would be similarities.
The fun part is seeing the dissimilarities that would arise from different body shapes and strengths, keeping in mind that most swords only weigh a couple of pounds, a kilo or so, and that rapiers were pretty heavy compared to a lot of others due to the longer blade and the extra pieces on the guard. Basket hilts can get a little chunky too but with the right blade can be pretty nimble, or they can be slower but hard hitting depending on the way the weight is distributed.
